Aurora Expeditions is an Australian pioneer in small-ship adventure, born from the passion of legendary mountaineer Greg Mortimer. For over 30 years, the brand has operated on a simple philosophy: the ship is a base camp, not the main event. While their hardware has evolved from rugged Russian research vessels to world-class “Infinity Class” luxury ships, the spirit remains “expedition first,” prioritising flexibility, wildlife encounters, and deep immersion over rigid schedules.
The fleet is purpose-built for the roughest oceans, featuring the patented Ulstein X-BOW® (an inverted bow design) that pierces waves rather than riding over them, significantly reducing motion and fuel consumption. This stability allows the ships to cross the Drake Passage more comfortably and reach remote areas other vessels cannot. Onboard, the atmosphere is relaxed and informal—muddy boots are welcome, and the open bridge policy encourages interaction with the captain and crew.
Operations have traditionally focused on the polar regions (Antarctica and the Arctic), but 2026 marks a strategic evolution with the “Arctic and Beyond” programme. This includes new “Small Ship Cruise” itineraries to non-polar destinations like Costa Rica, Scotland, and the Mediterranean, appealing to guests who want the Aurora style of intimate travel in warmer climates.
