Avalon Waterways revolutionised river cruising in 2011 with the launch of Panorama, the industry’s first Suite Ship featuring wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling windows and beds facing outward—innovations now widely copied but first pioneered by Avalon. The line’s Suite Ships dedicate 80% of staterooms to Panorama Suites, approximately one-third larger than competitors, with unique slide-open windows creating open-air balconies. 

The Avalon philosophy centres on “Cruising as you want it”—flexible dining times, à la carte menus, and the industry-leading Choice excursions programme offering Classic, Discovery, and Active options in every port. This appeals to younger, more independent travellers (average age mid-50s, younger than luxury lines) who reject rigid schedules. 

In 2024–2026, Avalon launched a comprehensive fleet-wide refresh installing Starlink high-speed internet, redesigned Sky Decks, upgraded fitness centres with Kinesis machines, and 15 new bicycles plus 4 e-bikes per ship—maintaining its position as the choice for active, design-forward river cruising.
