Quark Expeditions is exclusively focused on the polar regions, a singular specialisation that distinguishes it from generalist cruise lines. Founded in 1991 by Lars Wikander and Mike McDowell, the company pioneered commercial transits of the Northeast Passage and was the first to take commercial passengers to the North Pole. Today, it remains a leader in high-adventure expedition travel, defined by its “go further” philosophy.

The brand caters to active, well-travelled individuals who view the ship primarily as a basecamp for exploration. Quark’s operations are characterised by their agility; the fleet is purpose-built to navigate ice-choked waters that larger vessels cannot reach. A key differentiator is the extensive portfolio of “Adventure Options,” ranging from heliskiing and alpine kayaking to overnight camping on the Antarctic ice. The onboard atmosphere is casual and educational, with a high ratio of expedition staff, including glaciologists, marine biologists, and historians, to guests.

Operations are strictly bipolar: the Arctic (Svalbard, Greenland, Canadian High Arctic) during the northern summer and Antarctica (Peninsula, South Georgia, Falklands) during the southern summer. Quark is also a founding member of the Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators (AECO) and the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO), underscoring its commitment to responsible tourism.
