MIAMI, Florida – 02 October 2026 – Royal Caribbean will introduce “The SpongeBob Musical” aboard Hero of the Seas when the fourth Icon Class ship begins sailing from Miami in August 2027.
The production will be the first at-sea version inspired by the Tony Award-winning Broadway show and Nickelodeon animated series. It will be staged in the Royal Theater as part of Hero of the Seas’ entertainment programme.
Christi Coachman, Vice President, Entertainment, Royal Caribbean, said the ship’s entertainment programme was designed to offer experiences for different generations and described the production as one intended to bring families together through a familiar story. She said: “Our entertainment lineup on Hero of the Seas is designed with something for everyone.”
Broadway production reimagined for Hero of the Seas
The onboard production will transform the Nickelodeon animated series and the 12-time Tony Award-nominated Broadway show into a reimagined production for the whole family.
The story follows SpongeBob and his friends in Bikini Bottom as they race to save their town from destruction. Royal Caribbean said the production will combine the characters and storyline with songs and a new staging created for Hero of the Seas. The musical is based on the animated series created by Stephen Hillenburg and features a book by Kyle Jarrow. Its music includes original songs by a range of artists, including Yolanda Adams, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, Jonathan Coulton, Alexander Ebert, The Flaming Lips, Lady A, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Panic! At the Disco, Plain White T’s, They Might Be Giants and T.I., as well as songs by David Bowie, Tom Kenny and Andy Paley. Additional lyrics are by Jonathan Coulton, with additional music by Tom Kitt. The stage production was conceived by writer and director Tina Landau.
Entertainment joins wider Hero of the Seas offering
The SpongeBob Musical will form part of the entertainment programme on Hero of the Seas alongside experiences across stage, air, water and ice.
Elsewhere on the ship, Royal Caribbean has confirmed Crown’s Edge, a skywalk and zip line experience suspended 154 feet above the ocean, and Category 6, described by the company as the largest waterpark at sea. Hero of the Seas will feature nine pools, including the new Coconut Cove pool and the adults-only The Hideaway, which will have two pools and a swim-up bar.
The ship will also offer 28 dining venues, including the multi-course Orleans Parrish Supper Club, the immersive train-car dining experience Royal Railway – Hero Station and a new venue for hands-on cooking classes that has yet to be revealed.
New family accommodation will include the three-deck Ultimate Family Treehouse, featuring a rooftop terrace, whirlpool and a two-deck space for teenagers.
