June 15, 2026: Holland America Line will position Oosterdam off the coast of Spain for a rare sunset eclipse viewing on August 12, 2026, as part of a 13-day Mediterranean solar eclipse voyage departing Lisbon, Portugal.
The sailing, titled Mediterranean Solar Eclipse with Barcelona Overnight, departs on August 9, 2026, and remains open for booking. Holland America Line’s official solar eclipse cruise page lists the itinerary as one of its featured 2026 solar eclipse sailings, operating from August 9 to August 22, 2026.
The voyage is timed around the August 12, 2026, total solar eclipse, with Oosterdam scheduled to position off the Spanish coast for viewing. The location is expected to offer a distinctive view of the eclipse because totality will occur low on the horizon in parts of the western Mediterranean.
Eclipse viewing planned off the coast of Spain
The 2026 solar eclipse will be viewed from the open water during the Mediterranean itinerary, after Oosterdam departs Lisbon and calls in Alicante, Spain. Holland America Line said the ship will then position off the Spanish coast for the eclipse before continuing through the Mediterranean.
“What makes the Mediterranean so compelling for this eclipse is the setting itself,” said Dr. Adam Burgasser, professor at UC San Diego, who will sail aboard Holland America’s Oosterdam to guide guests through the experience.
“In parts of the western Mediterranean, totality will occur low on the horizon, creating a rare ‘sunset eclipse.’ Instead of straining your neck to look straight overhead, you’ll be watching the sun and moon meet each other at the horizon, with the normally gorgeous reds and oranges of a sunset sky suddenly obscured by the moon,” added Burgasser.
“Expect long shadows, a seemingly larger-than-normal sun, a visual illusion known as the horizon-proximity effect and the potential for a dramatic diamond ring effect just as the sun dips into the sea.”
The event is expected to differ from eclipse viewings where the sun is higher in the sky. In this case, the eclipse is being presented as a sunset viewing experience, with the sun and moon appearing close to the horizon.
Onboard programming to accompany the event
Holland America Line said the eclipse experience on Oosterdam will be supported by onboard programming before and during the event.
The planned features include themed food and beverage offerings, dedicated viewing events and presentations led by Burgasser. The programme will also include lectures and Q&A sessions in the days before the eclipse, as well as live commentary during totality.
Burgasser previously sailed aboard Holland America Line’s Koningsdam during the 2024 eclipse. For the Oosterdam sailing, he will guide guests through the 2026 event and provide context on the eclipse and its viewing conditions.
The sailing forms part of Holland America Line’s broader solar eclipse cruise programme. The company’s official page lists three featured 2026 solar eclipse itineraries, including the 35-Day Voyage of the Vikings Cruise with Solar Eclipse, the 13-Day Mediterranean Solar Eclipse with Barcelona Overnight and the 28-Day Scandinavian Solar Eclipse with Greenland & Scotland.
Itinerary includes Spain, France, Monaco and Italy
The 13-day Mediterranean Solar Eclipse with Barcelona Overnight itinerary departs Lisbon on August 9, 2026. The cruise includes a call in Alicante before Oosterdam positions for eclipse viewing off the coast of Spain.
After the eclipse, the itinerary includes an overnight stay in Barcelona, Spain. The ship is then scheduled to visit Port-Vendres and Marseille in France, followed by Monte Carlo, Monaco.
In Italy, the sailing includes Livorno, which provides access to Florence and Pisa, as well as Rome, Naples and Messina in Sicily. The voyage concludes in Civitavecchia.
Holland America Line’s official solar eclipse cruise page describes the itinerary as beginning in Lisbon, stopping in Alicante before the eclipse, including an overnight in Barcelona and continuing to ports in Spain and Italy.
Solar eclipse sailings remain part of Holland America Line programme
The Oosterdam voyage is one of several Holland America Line cruises designed around solar eclipse viewing. The company’s 2026 programme also includes eclipse viewing off Iceland on other itineraries, while its 2027 programme includes additional solar eclipse voyages in Europe and the Mediterranean.
For the 2026 Mediterranean sailing, the focus remains Oosterdam’s scheduled viewing position off Spain on August 12, 2026, and the onboard astronomy-led programme planned around the event.
